Running Android on your Raspberry Pi
What happens when you take Android out of the phone and put it on a Raspberry Pi?
Android is built on the Android Open Source Project (AOSP), which means that much of the platform we use every day is available for developers to explore, modify, build, and run themselves. In this talk, we'll take that idea literally and look at what it takes to get an AOSP-based Android image running on a Raspberry Pi.
We'll walk through the journey from the AOSP source code to a bootable Android system, looking at how the different pieces of Android fit together and what changes are needed to make Android work on Raspberry Pi hardware.
The Android image used in the talk is built from AOSP, giving us an opportunity to explore Android as an open-source platform rather than treating it as a black box. We'll look at the Android build system, hardware abstraction layers, the Linux kernel, and how AOSP interacts with the underlying hardware.
Along the way, we'll also discuss some of the challenges you encounter when moving Android beyond the hardware it was originally designed for—and what this tells us about the relationship between open-source software and hardware.
This is a hands-on look at AOSP for curious developers who want to understand what's underneath Android, experiment with the platform, and see what happens when you bring an open-source Android stack to a Raspberry Pi.
