From Beats to Bytes: What Music Production Can Teach About Programming
As a music producer and Android developer, I've discovered striking parallels between creating music and writing code. Both are creative disciplines that blend art with technical precision.
In this talk, I'll share insights from both worlds through the lens of Omasa, an app where I implemented dynamic music. We'll explore:
Patterns & Composition: How music loops mirror design patterns, and why both need variation to stay interesting
Layering & Architecture: Building complex arrangements vs. structuring codebases
Iteration & Refinement: The creative process of mixing tracks parallels code refactoring
Constraints breed creativity: How limitations (tempo, key) drive innovation, just like Android's resource constraints
This isn't a technical deep-dive into audio APIs, it's about applying creative workflows from music production to become a better developer. You'll leave with fresh perspectives on problem-solving and the creative aspects of programming that AI can't replicate.
